Overview of the Bureau

The Bureau of Labor Market Information of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services collects, analyzes and publishes labor force, occupational, industry, unemployment rate, unemployment claims and training data. A major portion of the Bureau's work consists or administration of federal-state statistical programs in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Bureau of Labor Market Information also collects and disseminates data under mandates of the U.S. Employment & Training Administration and Ohio Unemployment Compensation Law and for the National Center for Education & Statistics.

Sections and Contacts

The Administrative Industry Statistics (AIS) section, under the Quarterly Census of Employment & Wages (QCEW) program or ES-202, summarizes employment, wage and contribution data from employers covered under the Ohio Unemployment Insurance laws, as well as workers covered by unemployment compensation for federal employees.

The Current Employment Statistics (CES) section gathers and publishes monthly estimates of employment, earnings, and hours worked in goods-producing and service-providing industries in Ohio and its 12 metropolitan statistical areas. Estimates are published monthly in the Ohio Labor Market Review.

The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) and Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) section produces monthly data on labor force, employment and unemployment at state and sub-state levels. Local Area Unemployment Statistics provide current and historical civilian labor force data for the United States, Ohio, metropolitan areas, counties and selected Ohio cities. The section also identifies, reports on and tracks Mass Layoffs and plant closings events in Ohio.

The Occupational Employment Statistics section gathers detailed occupational employment and wage data. The section produces Occupational Employment Statistics (OES).

The Operations Reports section collects and reports unemployment insurance data, such as initial & continued claims, benefits paid and unemployment insurance exhaustees by state, county and/or local area.

The Workforce Research section maintains economic and labor market information for the Analyst Research Center. The section also produces Labor Market Projections for industry and occupational employment in Ohio. Leading Indicators, similar to the national leading indicator index, are published for Ohio and eight major metropolitan statistical areas.
